TEXAS PLANS TO EXECUTE:

JERRY MARTIN, condemned in connection with the 2007 death of a guard at a state prison in Huntsville during an escape attempt. Martin was serving a 50-year term for attempted capital murder. He was convicted of stealing a truck and hitting a horse being ridden by another guard, who fell to her death. His execution date was set when he gave up his appeals. It will be the 16th and final execution of the year in Texas. The trial of Martin’s co-defendant, John Falk Jr., ended in a mistrial last January. Prosecutors were seeking a retrial.

Juneteenth protesters in Houston invoke McCarthy's name.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Kimberly McCarthy, who claims jury selection in her trial was tainted by racism, is on track Wednesday to become the 500th person executed in Texas during the modern era. The total dwarfs that of every other state. The closest, Virgina, has put to death 110.

If Texas follows through with its plan, Execution Watch will provide live coverage and commentary on the execution, as well as the protests planned outside the death house.

TEXAS PLANS TO EXECUTE:

KIMBERLY McCARTHY, who has the gruesome distinction of holding No. 500 in the Texas death-penalty lottery. Unless she receives a stay before Thursday night, McCarthy will become the 500th person, and only the fourth woman, executed by Texas during the post-reinstatement era of the U.S. death penalty. The ex-crack addict was condemned in a 1997 robbery-slaying near Dallas. McCarthy is the former wife of New Black Panther Party founder Aaron Michaels, with whom she has a son. She is one of 10 women on Texas death row. McCarthy’s appeals allege that jury selection in her trial was tainted by racism.

Williams claimed he did not know the man was an officer, assumed he was being attacked, and shot the man in self defense. HUNTSVILLE - Texas is preparing to carry out its 495th execution of the modern era Tuesday, the date for Ronnie Paul Threadgill.

The Lone Star State is fast approaching its 500th execution. No other state is even close. Since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, second-place Virginia has executed 110.

RONNIE PAUL THREADGILL, sentenced to death for a 2001 slaying outside a Navarro County nightclub in which a 17-year-old boy was fatally wounded when two shots were fired into a car. The U.S. Supreme Court declined in 2012 to review the case. Threadgill's appeal asserted that his lawyers should have negotiated for a felony murder charge instead of capital murder. His would be the 495th execution in Texas during the modern era, in which nearly 40 percent of all U.S. executions have been carried out by Texas.

JOHN BALENTINE, 43, who has beaten two execution dates, winning stays each time. The former auto mechanic was condemned in the 1998 deaths of three teens in Amarillo. Prosecutors said the slayings were the result of a feud between Balentine and his ex-girlfriend's brother, one of the victims. Former U.S. Army recruiter to be executed Jan. 11

Tomorrow, the state controller will announce Texas' deficit, estimated by others at $15 billion to $25 billion. The following day, Jan. 11, Texas will put to death former Army recruiter Cleve "Sarge" Foster at a total cost of $2.3 million over life in prison.

Execution Watch will broadcast live coverage and analysis of Foster's execution.

Last year, Texas's highest-in-the-nation 17 executions represented a death-penalty surtax of nearly $40 million. What the cost to taxpayers will be for 2011, only time will tell.

  CLEVE “SARGE” FOSTER, 47, a former Army recruiter condemned in the 2002 slaying of a Sudanese woman in Fort Worth. Foster has maintained his innocence. Co-defendant Sheldon Ward, who claimed sole responsibility for the murder, cheated the executioner by dying of a brain tumor May 13, 2010, while on death row. Foster’s attempts to appeal his conviction reached as far as the U.S. Supreme Court. News reports indicate his sister and mother, who live in his native Kentucky, plan to witness Foster’s death-by-lethal-injection. His execution will be the first in Texas since Oct. 21.
